Are Your Beauty Products Safe?

Are Your Beauty Products Safe?

Are you using all natural or non-toxic beauty products?

If not, you might be putting your health at risk. We here at Vintage Beauty know change can be hard, but moving away from unnatural ingredients can have a tremendous impact on your health, your looks, and your energy!

Take a look at your beauty products – your lotions, your hair products, your makeup – anything that touches your skin should be evaluated for toxicity. But how can you figure out what is toxic and what is safe? We recommend giving any products that include unrecognizable ingredients in their formulation a second look. If you visit ewg.org and type in any ingredients that may be suspect, you’ll receive a non-biased evaluation of the toxicity levels of that particular ingredient. You can also type in the specific product to receive an overall evaluation of the risks associated with using that product. Natural beauty products will have a low rating in the EWG database. Always look for products in the 0-2 range, marked with a green circle.

The rule of thumb when evaluating your beauty products is to toss ’em (or switch when the jar is empty)  if your products contain any of the following: phthalates, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, or any of the other common toxic ingredients found in conventional skincare products. When in doubt – look it up!

And we all know that sunscreen is key for keeping skin and lips safe, but EWG recommends avoiding the following typically toxic sunscreen additives:

  • SPF above 50
  • Retinyl palmitate
  • Aerosol spray and powder sunscreen
  • Oxybenzone
  • Added insect repellent

EWG urges consumers to avoid leave on skin and lip products with vitamin A. “Sunlight breaks down vitamin A to produce toxic free radicals that can damage DNA and hasten skin lesions and tumors in lab animals. These ingredients are widely used in sunscreens, skin lotions, lip products and makeup.” (Source: ewg.org)

So with these tips in mind, be sure to give your beauty arsenal a good look over, and while you’re at it – check out your loved one’s products too! Let’s make this world a safer one for everyone!
